Brett J. Maerz Receives STEP Academic Achievement Award

The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) is the leading international organization for trust and estate professionals who specialize in family inheritance and succession planning. STEP administers the Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP) designation, an internationally recognized hallmark of professional expertise in the area of trusts and estates.

Brett is currently completing the qualifications to become TEP designated. One of the routes to a TEP designation is undertaking (and passing) four challenging courses that cover all aspects of trust and estate planning.

Maerz has joined our firm as the newest member of our Wills, Trusts and Estate Group and Business Law Group.  Originally from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Brett obtained her Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor at the University of Saskatchewan before moving to the west coast to practice law in Vancouver.

Owen Bird is pleased to announce that Isabella Stuart has joined our firm as the newest member of our Litigation Group. Isabella obtained her B.A. at the University of British Columbia and her J.D. from the University of Victoria.

Prior to joining Owen Bird, Isabella’s litigation practice focused on insurance defence.  She has experience in dealing with a variety of claims, including property loss, construction, occupier’s liability, product liability, personal injury and insurance coverage claims.

Owen Bird is proud to announce that Geoff Bowman, Jennifer Loeb, Jean Feng and Nikta Shirazian have become shareholders effective January 1, 2024.

Geoff Bowman: Geoff was called to the bar in 2005 and joined Owen Bird in September 2023. His practice focuses on resolving construction disputes, including relating to procurement. Geoff has been involved in projects of all sizes, including major projects in excess of $1B.  Geoff’s experience includes insurance defence work focused on construction-related matters and professional negligence claims in addition to a broad range of general commercial disputes.

Greg Tucker and Nikta Shirazian Present to the Insurance Institute of BC

Greg Tucker K.C. and Nikta Shirazian recently presented at the Insurance Institute of British Columbia, drawing an audience of over 120 participants for their webinar on Commercial General Liability (CGL) policies. They covered crucial topics, including providing an overview of the structure of the CGL, key insuring agreements, interaction with other types of policies, and explored the ‘time on risk’ protocol for multi-year CGL policies. Geoff’s practice is focussed on resolving construction disputes.  His litigation experience includes negligence, insurance defence, fraud, land use issues, professional discipline and tendering.  He has significant procurement experience as a barrister and as a solicitor, assisting government owners and bidders.
