Chris has practiced commercial law at Owen Bird Law Corporation for 32 years and has been recognized by the Chambers Global publication as one of “The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business”. He takes a practical “hands on” approach to the practice of law, with the goal of establishing long term relationships with his client base.
Chris has acted for clients ranging from sole proprietorships to the largest privately owned company in Western Canada as well as public companies, municipal governments, and the Province of British Columbia. In addition to negotiating and drafting commercial agreements, Chris also represents clients before regulatory bodies such as the British Columbia Utilities Commission and the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. Chris has particular expertise in energy law and communications law and has advised clients on energy supply agreements, disposition and purchase of energy and communications assets, utility rates, rate design and many other aspects of utility contracts, tariffs and regulation as well as the creation of district energy systems.
Chris strives to build a strong, trusted advisor relationship with his clients and has been recognized by one of his long term clients, the British Columbia Association of Broadcasters, on two occasions with its “Friend of the Industry Award” for service to that province wide organization. He continues to represent a client he met on his first day as an articled student at Owen Bird 30 years ago.
Chris has lectured on broadcasting and telecommunications law at Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia, faculty of law where he has served as an adjunct professor. Chris contributes to the Continuing Legal Education’s “Due Diligence – Checklist” publication each year and has served as the National Chair of the Canadian Bar Association, Media and Communications Law section.
Chris serves as Co-managing Director of Owen Bird Law Corporation and has done so since 2002.
