James D Burns
Jim practices in the area of Wills, Estates, Trusts, Tax and Estate Planning and is the Head of the Wealth Preservation Practice Group at the firm. He is a Past President and a Life Member of the Estate Planning Council of Vancouver.
As a former banker and corporate and commercial lawyer, Jim specializes in advising families with business succession and related tax issues. He has acted as counsel for a number of trust companies in estate administration and estate litigation matters and for investment firms in estate compliance matters.
A past Chair of the Wills and Trusts Section of the Canadian Bar Association, Jim has been involved in both Continuing Legal Education programs in the Wills and Estates area and in committee work for the Law Institute of British Columbia, advising the Province on the need for legislative changes in the area of Testate Succession. The Institute’s work has resulted in the passing of the new Wills, Estates and Succession Act which became law in March of 2014.
Outside the firm, Jim is a Past Commodore and an Honorary Life Member of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and currently a Vice President and a Director of the International Council of Yacht Clubs, a worldwide Council based in Vancouver.
